Lately Quincy has loved the 'reading chair' in her room. It goes with our living room furniture, but it didn't fit when we moved in so we put it in Quincy's room. Its one of her favorite places and usually the first place she goes in the morning! She will sit there and 'read' to herself for 20-30 minutes while I get other things done. When we read to her in the chair she likes to snuggle in just right--love her!

I set up a little play/creative room downstairs. Its a great combo, Quincy plays and I work on a project. Yesterday she colored valentine hearts with her new friend and went down the slide over and over.

I couldn't find Quincy's pink coat the other day (it was in Ladd's car at work) so I put on this 'vintage' red coat that my mom made for my older sister Deanne. (28 years old) Its so cute..and it really good shape...my mom's a pro.

I'm teaching Q the song "I'm so glad when daddy comes home" because she always gets so excited when he is here, or when he walks through the door. I love this picture even though its blurry...she loves her daddy and you can tell!

So there you have it...Q's favorite things...books, reading chair, blankie, baby, pillow pet, Blue's clues, slide, coloring, and of course--daddy!

Visit To Richland

At the beginning of the month Quincy and I flew to Richland, WA to visit with they Galloways and my parents. I went to help, but I'm sure I wasn't as much help as I planned. It was GREAT to be around family and Quincy loved playing with her cousins...even though she probably hit Briggs 15 times. (He's such a nice kid he never hit her back...I want a kid like that.)

At least Quincy doesn't hit herself in the face anymore while saying "no, dont!" That little habit made us look like real outstanding parents. I'm glad she stopped.

On Thursday Chloe didn't have school so we made dessert together (we didn't have chefs hats so we put baby blankets on our heads. Yes we look like cancer patients, but we had fun). We also made ornaments for gifts and stuffed Christmas card envelopes.

She told me, "You're really fun to play with."

Ditto kid.

On Friday we went to see the reindeer. It was cold but we all enjoyed ourselves.

We Are Marshall

We had Thanksgiving with the Marshall and Nielson families....here are some pictures from last week.

Quincy slept a total of 4 minutes for her nap on Wednesday. She was actually pretty good given that fact that she didn't sleep.

The Nielson family had a dinner at David and Ardee's house a few miles from Ladd's parents. They have an extensive collection of sheep, deer, elk, bear, and birds that have been displayed on the walls. Holy taxidermy :) There were 11 Doll sheep heads on one wall up in their loft.

Quincy loves to look at videos on the iPhone and when we aren't quite ready to get up we bring her in bed with us and watch videos until we feel like starting the day.

We went to play basketball at the church. Can you believe that Colleen has never shot a basketball before in 74 years of life? We played a few games and I even won a shooting game. Take that boys.

Look at this playground in Idaho Falls...its pretty sweet! Two stories. It was too cold for Quincy to enjoy herself, but the adults went down the slides.

After our walk to the playground we went to lunch at the Snake Bite with James and Diana. Quincy kept herself entertained by playing with ice water, and not surprisingly ended up spilling it all over her jeans. We took those off and just wrapped her up in the blanket while we visited a few stores including this toy store where she's on the rocking horse.

We love having a tub!!... during bath time I read Quincy the Book of Mormon and sometimes sing songs. Lately she has been putting her hands on her ears and shaking her head. Maybe she's tired of hearing my voice.

We love being so close to everything!! 10 minutes closer makes a big difference when you want to take a quick trip to the splash park.

We love having a yard!! Here's to messy spaghetti faces and dirt covered fingers. Can't decide if this picture says I'm a good mom or bad one. I'm not concerned. She has fun playing with her car and swings and saying "doggie doggie" to our back door neighbors little dog.

Did you ever listen to Raffi when you were younger or was that just my family?

We have been busy moving into our new house and unpacking but it was fun to take time out and go to the zoo with our friends the Eyre family and their three boys. We got a zoo pass so if you want to go to the zoo we'd love to take you.

I actually enjoyed the zoo considering I don't really like animals. :)

You can't see Daniel Steel Marshall in the family photo but he sure is cute. My newest nephew. Gold stars to Ruth who brought her 1 month old out to a family party! I was so excited to see him even though he looks less than enthused to see me.

This is my 100th post. I only know one person who is 100 and that's my backdoor neighbor from Spokane (across the alley). She turned 100 in July. I'm her favorite. :)

Safari Time

We were lucky enough to go to a friends birthday party (for their girl turning 2). It was decorated like an African Safari and everything was so well done. They had little binoculars as you arrive, cut outs of animals painted in bright colors, a bird show, face painting, and a food spread that was delicious.

I was looking through photos of my brother's wedding and you know what...these dresses are really cute. Fabric from Hobby Lobby, pattern from my sister's stash. They were quite simple to make, and looked great on the kids. Deanne made all the orange bows and Briggs' orange tie.

Some times she just eats the peas, but lately she smashes every single one with her pointer finger, then eats them...or throws them on the ground. So fun.

My mom tells me I used to like dogs also.

Quincy loves Chicken. mmmmmm.
Its hard to find pride in ownership for a house you don't live in. (our rental house) and you live 1 hr away from.
Home Depot has a generous return policy.
I enjoy home renovation projects and getting my hands dirty.
I'm gaining a new NEPHEW in November! And a nephew soon in JULY!
I can't wait to have a new sister in law! Let the wedding festivities begin.

Scape Goat

Quincy is a pretty good scape goat for almost anything..."Quincy did it" ha ha...but in reality she is like a goat--a garbage eating goat--like they have in Spokane where I grew up.

I swear, I turn my head for a few ticks (ok sometimes minutes:) )and she's grabbed paper from someplace she shouldn't be able to get it from and she's bitten off a piece and is chewing it. She isn't picky either...newspaper, shopping ads, cookbooks, receipts, Ensign magazines. She loves crinkly paper--and she always gets upset when I take it away.

At least she's a cute garbage eating goat.

When she finished the popsicle she started on the plastic :)

Baby's Gender

You've heard of that "forward thinking" couple in the news recently who isn't telling people the gender of their baby?

Well, their NUTS--but we seem to have the opposite problem at our house.

Quincy gets mistaken for a boy at least 4 or 5 times a week--mostly by old people, and she's usually wearing pink, but she gets "Oh, he's so cute" or "How old is he?" quite often--probably because she looks like her dad.

Dear Quincy,

Please grow some hair so I can clip a darn bow to it. Thanks in advance.

New Years Resolutions...

I spent a bunch of money at the dentist last year. So, I made it my new years resolution to floss regularly. I've missed one day so far in 2011--forgot the floss. Have you kept any of your New Years Resolutions?

In other news... I applied for a half-time teaching position here in the valley --just for fun --and even was scheduled for an interview but canceled the morning of. It took a sleepless night and a look at these two faces to remind me why I "retired" from teaching in the first place. Plus, I didn't like the feeling of setting my alarm to get up for the interview. NO thanks. If the perfect teaching opportunity came along (Every other day teaching sewing which is minimal prep work) I might take it, but for now I'm teaching Quincy how to do tricks. ha ha.

My friend/co-worker from last year at PC high passed away last week from colon cancer. He leaves behind his wife and three sons. This is just so sad, and honestly weird to me because I haven't been to a funeral/memorial in a long long time.

Craft Fair

I went to a craft fair in my neighborhood last week--there was a lot of neat stuff--but that's really all it was. cute STUFF. A lot of it I could make myself--or get my mom or sisters to make it for me for a quarter of the price, but it was fun to get some good ideas. I left with nothing for the above reason--maybe I'll make it myself--in the future for our house.

My parents taught us kids how to DIY--but there is one thing I saw online last week and wanted it really badly because I don't have the patience or skill (yet--maybe in 50 years) to complete something as beautiful as this. This is art. Seriously--LOVE IT!!!!

Grandma came to visit for the week!!!

We went to the Sweets Candy Factory for a tour--Quincy had to wear a beard net on her head--but I think she liked it.

We made Mango/Orange/Banana sorbet--yummy and topped it off with strawberries and kiwi for dessert--its extra good with vanilla ice cream

My cousins Madison and Mackenzie came up for General Conference and we had a birthday party for them on Sunday. We had an M'nM ice cream cake to celebrate their 20th birthday.

Quincy is all into the cheesy grin. If you point the camera at her and say smile she scrunches up her nose and eyes and does this face.

Ladd got this toy from his mom for his birthday in February, but Quincy seems to love it.

My mom worked on an Easter dress for Quincy--(Pictures to come later) She made it with no pattern and it only took a few hours--A very talented mother I have (yoda speak)

Quincy is getting into everything--crawling all over, pulling herself up on furniture, and she talks gibberish constantly. Cute, but crazy and sad at the same time.

This past week was nothing spectacular, but it did hold a lot of firsts for our family.

1. Reactions...I'm not sure what it was but I had an allergic reaction to something that caused swollen lips, eyes, hands, and feet. It was painful, and its the FIRST time I've had a reaction to anything. No fun.

2. Clapping...Ladd taught Quincy how to clap. Mostly she just moves her right hand to hit her left, but it gets the job done.

3. Crawling...I watched a neighbor girl for a few hours (actually she napped for 80% of the time) and she was crawling before I put her down. Quincy had previously only moved backwards, but as soon as she saw Ava crawl forward, she took her FIRST movements forward. I guess we're going to have to start baby proofing. :(

4. Big Girl Seat... Quincy graduated to the regular stroller seat instead of riding in her carseat.

5. Reaping the Rewards...without doing the work. I went to see my kids from last year compete in this year's Prostart Competition. I was able to enjoy the competition and feel like I helped them, but not have to do all the planning, and shopping, and other prep work. It was awesome to see them, it made me miss the students, but not so much that I wanted to go back to work:)

Quincy's also getting another tooth...so cute.

2/21/11 Monday's Musings...

We were looking for something better to do on Saturday night than watch a movie so I suggested we start putting Ladd's mission pictures (Zimbabwe/Zambia Africa) into a book and adding journal excerpts and pictures of souvenirs, etc. (I'm trying to eliminate piles here!)

It was fun getting started--and he even let me read his journal. In the first 10 pages I read, "Oh yeah!" at least 20 times...and his entries usually started like... "This day totally rocked," or "Today was an awesome day, oh yeah!" His journal was so positive, fun to read, and inspiring.

Ladd, you're totally awesome!

PS: Did you know that I played basketball in 5-8th, 9th, 10th, and 12th grade? My team went 1-19 my senior year. Totally NOT awesome :)

PPS: This has nothing to do with basketball but I am so excited that my sister-in-law is going to have a baby in July!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She has twin boys already--so cute!

Ladd and I have played 211 games of Sequence in the last 7 months.

We started playing because we got into the bad habit of watching TV or being on the computer till late at night when those were the only hours that we were really together (I worked from 7am to 4pm, and Ladd worked from 1pm-10pm). We decided that instead of those activities we would play board games together--hence the ongoing Sequence tournament.

Come to think of it, maybe that's why we thought

Quincy was a cute name.

Reverse the syllables of Sequence and you'll understand.

Two nights ago I snuggled into bed after taking care of Quincy..... and Ladd, still asleep, started making noises that sounded a little like gun noises.... “Ruh, ruh, guh, guh, tuh, guh....”

I accidentally nudged him while getting in and he rolled over while saying, “Stupid Turkey” in disgust.

Knowing he was dreaming I asked, “What game are you playing?”

“Candy, guh, ruh, guh.”

“What game?”

“Gandy, guh……” and then he drifted off to sleep while I lay there internally laughing.

Stupid turkey :)

No Christmas Gift for Quincy

We went over to watch the BYU/Arizona game at our friends house and I was asked, "What are you getting Quincy for Christmas?

um, "I wasn't planning on getting her anything."

Is that bad?

When we got home I told Ladd and he said, "Yes you are--you're getting her that book."

I forgot--because it won't be done until January but I'm getting her this photo/memory book from blurb. (well, an extra copy of ours) Here are a few photos of my progress.

I guess Q won't go empty handed for Christmas after all!

yeah, its 276 pgs so far and I haven't done Nov or Dec, but after blurbs great prices and a groupon voucher they should be just over $50 for a 350 pg book.

Quincy started laughing today--so cute! We got a fun video, but I took the card out of the camera too fast and it damaged the file. Sad. However, the little giant started laughing again after her bath and we got it on tape. Enjoy!

Look what came in the mail... I'm a level two!

Which means I'm pretty awesome and I have 5 years to meet the requirements for re-certification instead of 3. Cool beans--hope I don't have to use it any time soon.

And for the stuff you really care about...

Halloween-I was a fairy again, Ladd was a chef. Halfway through the night he took my wand and became a 'magic chef' and Q was bee. We went trick or treating with our friends the Larsons. Ririe was a postman, Scott was a box, Gina was the packaging and Ansel was the stamp. So creative!

Our neighbors had scones and hot chocolate--and fondue in their garage. It was raining outside for a little while so it was great to gather someplace warm and talk to friends. Great tradition.

Ladd, our friend Nate, Quincy and I drilled holes in our pumpkins and put lights in them--the boys were pretty intense with their pumpkin art.

The lights in my pumpkin weren't quite working. (the heart one--like you really needed me to tell you that)

Quincy is all smiles lately--unless she's scowling while contemplating the deep mysteries of the universe. She also likes to talk to us and sing along to our songs. She loves to chew on her fingers, but becomes frustrated after a bit because they aren't food. She's sleeping well and loves her bath time.
So happy to have this little girl!

Cali Trip

Here is Quincy before the trip...she's working on her double chin.

We stopped for a break at the salt flats on I-80. I tasted it even though its dirty...it tastes like salt. :)

We stayed the night in Roseville outside of Sacramento. Quincy always makes funny poses and faces when we are changing her.

After Quincy was done, I enjoyed a bath!

We left early in the morning and drove over to Muir Woods. It was beautiful, and yes, it was raining. We walked around for two hours and Quincy took a nap in the sling for the 2nd half)

We then went to the Golden Gate bridge--in the rain--and ran across. Its been something I've wanted to do for a while--in fact its on my life goal/to do list.

(I've done 4 things on the list and have a lot to go)

Run a marathon
Get kissed on New Years Eve
Have a family
Run across the Golden Gate Bridge

We also went to Ghirardelli Square and had a chocolate milkshake. We drove around down town and on the hills (in a manual car)--I thought I was going to die. Do you know that some people pay over $1,000 a month to park their car on the side of a hill? This city was fun to see, but I could never live there.

We stayed Friday and Saturday night at Colin and Kathy Moore's house in Napa. It is beautiful there--and it rained the whole time except for an hour when we visited the pumpkin patch. Ladd and Colin went to the Bridge School concert on Saturday night and Kathy and I decorated pumpkins. We drilled holes in the pumpkin and put white Christmas lights in them. The Moores were such great hosts and we hope we can come back next year.

Sometimes I day dream about the garden I'm going to have when I get to live in a house I own.

Where I'm going to plant my tomatoes and rhubarb and raspberries...I haven't drawn it out yet, but I've made a "dream garden" list.

Sometimes I day dream about living closer to my family--especially my older sister with her kids--not because I want the cousins to know each other (I do), but because I'm selfish and I want to live closer to her.

Heck, it would just be nice to live closer to family (Michelle and Ruth, ever thought of relocating?)

Spanish Fork is too far away Mary.

Sometimes I dream about having a bath tub--just to soak.

Sometimes I dream about looking out my windows and seeing the ground.

Sometimes I day dream about those things, but I know they aren't going to make me happy--because I'm already happy! I just kind of want those things. :)

But for now, I'm very content living in the bottom half of this house,

getting all utilities included in my rent,

hanging out with my new baby girl,

enjoying my new hobbies,
practicing my old ones,

taking showers,

not missing working,

making new friends in the ward and neighborhood,

picking produce from the huge community garden by our driveway,

seeing our neighbors beautiful landscaping and playing tennis on their court,

talking to my family on the phone and seeing them a few times each year,

and counting all my blessings because I know I've got it good.

Quincy was napping so I decided to clean my kitchen.

(Its amazing how an infant who isn't mobile can destroy your nice clean house).

I was cleaning the stove when the picture frame fell behind.

(its a really cheap frame of a napkin my grandma sent me from a casino restaurant, so no worries.

She also got me those measuring cups from a yard sale--love her!!)

I pulled out the stove, retrieved the frame, put back the stove and continued cleaning.

I lifted up the word art and the L fell off--you guessed it, behind the stove.

I didn't have the option of being annoyed/frustrated because the sign was telling me to just.....

We're doing great hear at the Marshall house--Quincy is up to 8 lbs and changing everyday.

The Story...

Induction time got delayed again so we played tennis. Then it got delayed again so we played Scatergories where Ladd always cheats by trying to use adjectives.

Went to the hospital at 10pm--took a last prego pic, started contracting on my own, physician X'd the plan for Citotec tablets, and went for a low dose of pitocin (which changed nothing over the next 8 hours.)

7:30 am, increased pitocin, 8:30-broke my water, started contracting, 1:30 received epidural, 5pm started pushing, 6:37 she arrived. (It looks like I'm in pain, but those are happy tears)

Equally happy and overwhelmed Ladd, my wonderful mother, and awesome sister Mary were there helping me with the delivery. (I can use adjectives too.)

Our friends Jen and Jeff Robbins visited us at the hospital, but forgot to bring Quincy's 5 older brothers. It was great to see them and they brought us these beautiful pink roses. Thank you!

So, I was in 'labor' for 12 hours, but in the hospital for 21hrs before she was born, and didn't eat for 30 hours total. All worth it!

Quincy is just a name we liked, Anne is just a mash up of Deanne (my sister's name, and mom's middle name) and Suzannah (my middle name).

My nieces are really good at improv--especially making up songs. I talked to my niece Chloe (just turned 3) yesterday on the phone--and when asked by her mom to sing a song to me about having a baby, she came up with this almost immediately.

"I have a baby, I have a baby, I have a baby, if it comes down."

Key word there is IF.

I was entertained the whole day :) Thanks Chloe--you're the best.

Ladd and I drove up the canyon to where you can look over both valleys at the same time. (Between Park City and Sandy. We brought up a blanket and picnic, but it was raining up at the top so we had a picnic in our car and looked at the beautiful view. We didn't realize there were hiking trails up at the top--maybe next time we can enjoy those as well!

Me: "Really? Did you even hear what I said?"

Ladd: "Yeah, breakfast smoothie."

One sausage and egg smoothie coming right up. Mmmmmmmm.

Summer Projects and One Sad Story

Ladd and I have been working on getting our apartment ready for our new arrival. There are a few unfinished pieces, but here are our summer projects so far. I've had fun trying to reuse and revamp items-- and to see if I could get/create a deal. Thanks to such generous friends and family at school and church showers--our baby room is pretty much finished. Yes, she is spoiled.

**The Room--Our landlord upstairs allowed us to use the extra bedroom/her storage room--so most of these items are hers and the couch got moved upstairs--found $1 yard fabric to create a fake wall to hide and protect her things.

Dresser: After we knew we were staying, I found this dresser off of KSL for $65. I wanted something sturdy and not made from mdf. I repainted it, spray painted the handles, and replaced the white nob fronts with fake crystals. Ladd opened the drawer to discover it was a 1960-70's Ethan Allen piece--selling for $350-800 on Ebay. Nice.

The Crib: Ladd put together the crib (see earlier post) and I made the bedding. My sister Deanne showed me a blog that had crib sheet patterns--super easy. Store price for brown sheets were $6-9 each, I was able to make 4 for $8.50! I did splurge on the flower fabric, but was able to find it half price online.

Guest Bed: I wanted to have a place to have family stay (the baby can be moved:) so I drew up a design so we could store items underneath--and Ladd helped me build it. Jason at Home Depot cut all the pieces to size for us, and we assembled it at home. We put our foam mattress on top, added sheets and pillows, and my sister Mary helped me make a thin quilt for the bedding out of scrap fabrics (not finished yet). All in all, with materials and bedding, it didn't cost more than $80. (Not including mattress) yeah!

Diaper Bag: I like sewing and creating things so I used fabric that I had to make a diaper bag-- (Ladd says its too girly for him to wear around.) It is a little big, but I like the style with the snap closures ( a great invention) and leather flowers. I made a big mess in our apt. designing the pattern and cutting it out--and besides about 7-8 hours (over 2 days), it only cost about $15 for a custom bag--not that I would sell it at that price :)

Bouncer: We found a $3 bouncer at a yard sale this Saturday. It was a little dirty but I went to wash it, the fabric part didn't come off--with out scissors that is:) So I used some leftover fabric from the crib skirt and fleece that student left at school and made a new one. The pinks don't match, but who cares? It was a great deal and fun project.

Ok, now for the sad story. All on his own, Ladd decided he was going to sell his VW bus. Here are some pictures just before he parted with it. For this past week he's been saying in a sad voice, "I sold the bus." The good thing is he sold it for more than he bought it for--after adding 50,000 miles to it.

Another end of the school year (next week) is coming fast and although I won't miss things like those few rude students, or mass-grocery shopping, I will miss a lot of wonderful things about my job.

Ladd came home late after work and I made him a quick pizza style sandwich in the sandwich maker. Then, like a hungry boy does, he asked for another one and we started making it together. I thought I was almost finished when this conversation started:

Ladd: "You forgot the marinara sauce Katie, it needs it."

Katie: "Sorry, I used it all up on the last one. I can open a new jar if you want but that would be a little wasteful..."

Ladd, opens the fridge, reaches back to grab a sour cream container that had red sauce in it from a few days ago, "Here's some sauce, use this."

Katie: "How did you know that was in there?"

Ladd: "Well, you obviously don't scrounge around in the fridge as much as I do."

Obviously.

Ladd's Birthday: February 11th

I took my 1st period prep-time off from school and made Ladd breakfast. Eggs, potatoes, and turkey bacon. It looked really nice, however, Ladd dished up his plate, squirted ketchup all over it and mixed everything together (ruining the presentation--I mean, if he wanted goulash, then just ask for it.) :)

Then I went to work and he went skiing and later we went out to the Pie for pizza. Yum.

Park City School District has a February break affectionately called Ski Week--even though a lot of students don't ski. I've been sewing, watching the Olympics, exercising, running errands, and enjoying my week off.

Make Your Own Theater Room

The story:

Ladd and I wanted to watch a DVD, but we have a 13" TV (One that my dad used to put in the middle of our family van for road trips.) Its fully equipped with a built in VCR player too! Totally sweet--however if the movie is wide screen--we end up watching a movie that is 5 " by 12".

So, we put the DVD on our new-to-us computer and transformed a room in our basement apartment to the "Theater Room". Its a lot more fun this way--and way cheaper!

Step One:

Remove unwanted furniture.

Step Two: Lay down a mattress, or blankets and pillows--or bring over the couch.

Step Three: Popcorn! (or other yummy snacks)

Step Four: Enjoy the movie!

We watched "Monsters vs. Aliens"-the animated film--I would recommend it.

One of the things we like to do together is be in the kitchen and make new recipes or really yummy old ones.

I teach a class in high school called Prostart--which is a higher level cooking class where they learn more about the culinary field as well as participate in a competition with other high school teams in the state.

We get to wear chefs jackets and since Ladd is my assistant

chef most of the time--I gave him his own to wear.

He looks pretty sharp doesn't he!

The Secret Garden

Actually, its not secret, but it was fun to have right next to our driveway this year. We joined the community garden group in April--there were seven properties with gardens, but this empty lot became the biggest one--with tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, squash varieties, cucumbers, apples, corn, and grapes.

We enjoyed having fresh ingredients right outside the door.

Taco Run

Last night Ladd and I were watching sportsbeat on TV and one of the commercials were for shredded beef tacos. They looked so good I decided I needed to have one....

Katie: "I need a taco"

Ladd: "No you don't"

Katie: "I want a taco--oh, they looked so good."

Ladd: "It's 11:30--and you just ate something."

Katie: "I need a taco."
Ladd: Jumps off the couch--"Lets go for a taco run."

Me being new to the bachelorhood ritual taco run, I was excited. We sang "Taco Run" lyrics to the opera music that was playing in the car and went to the closest Taco Bell: CLOSED.

Katie: "I don't know if I want one anymore."

Ladd: "I don't give up so easily."

Katie: "Ok, turn on the street by Wal Mart--they might have something."

All we could find was a Del Taco--two mini hard tacos and one soft taco later--taco run complete.

Katie: "That was good."

We took off towards home, except for we only got about 50 feet until Ladd turns into the Wendy's drive through.

Ladd: "I need a frosty!"

Katie: "No you don't."

Ladd: "I want a frosty......one small frosty half vanilla, half chocolate please.....that will be $1.07 at the second window....thanks"

I hand him 4 quarters and 1 dime. He hands them the change, he gets his frosty and drives off.

Katie: "Aren't you going to get your three cents?"

Ladd: "Nope, we're tipping tonight."

-Room For Improvement-- Jordanelle Triathlon

Ladd and I signed up for the Jordanelle Triathlon after some of the Liechty cousins said they were going to sign up as they were intown for a family wedding. As the triathlon came closer, we realized that none of the cousins signed up--and we didn't train very much--still, we didn't want to waste our entry fee so we participated. We had a great time together, got massages after we were done, and if you go to the zazoosh website you can see Ladd doing a guitar kick at the finish line. To see more pics our bib numbers are 234 and 36.

First was the .5 mile swim--I almost died. 30 front strokes, 30 back strokes :)

Second was the 13 mile bike--I had a mountain bike because I didn't want to rent a road bike for $35 for a race I didn't train for. The thing I heard from racers during this section the most was "ON YOUR LEFT" or "Good job mountain biker." Lame, embarrassing, still had fun.

Third was the 3 mile run--my specialty. Passed 30 people (not in my age group, but just people) 1/2 of them were walking, and the other 1/2 were probably doing the longer distance, but it still felt good to be fast at something that day.

All I can say is if I ever do another tri--it won't be hard to improve!

That night Grant and Susan Cannon gave us tickets to the Salt Lake Bee's game--after the game there were awesome fireworks. Here's Ladd relaxing after a hard days fun.

Ladd's comments: What a fun day! If we were doing the Olympic distance (2x longer than the sprint distance), I am not sure the experience would have been as good given that we didn't train very much. Regardless of how fit we were, the environment and general atmosphere of the race was awesome. I am glad that I had a wet suit because the swim was tough. Swimming in a straight line is harder than you think! After the swim I had a good bike ride. I felt very retro with my 1985 ten speed. The hardest transition was going from pedaling to running. My legs felt very, very heavy. After about one mile I was loose and had a great run, and finished it with a sweet guitar kick accross the finish line.

On everyone's calves they had your age written. It was amazing/humbling to see bikers zip by with a 60 and up on their calf. It opened my eyes to see people that had made exercise such a part of their lifestyle, and the benefits that it produced. I recommend a triathlon to everyone!

Inspiration

Well, as many of you can see--it has been almost a year since Ladd or I have posted on our blog--mostly out of laziness.

I pledge to blog at least twice a month--hopefully more. I just went to an enrichment night where we learned about what you could do with blogging and I was inspired to stop being lazy.

Hopefully this works.

A few things we have been up to....

This is at Deanne and Patrick's house in Richland, WA. We went up there for Easter.

Ladd stayed out all night to buy tickets for Wicked, sold 6 of them so we could go for free--the show was amazing and we had a great time.

For our 2 year anniversary we went indoor skydiving--which is pretty much indoor flying in Ogden, UT. We enjoyed it so much that we went back in August with my brother Luke.

For my UEA break (fall break for school) we drove up to Rexburg, ID to visit Ladd's brother Aaron and his wife Ruth. We got to see, and hold their new twin boys that were exactly a week old. Donald Paul and David Warren Marshall. So cute.

I made some fabric hangings to add color on the wall since we can't paint. I also got nice designer fabric from my coworker at school. Her friend works at an Interior Design company and these were the extra samples. I love free and nice things. I made the pillows, Ladd stuffed!

We moved into our new place here in Holladay--we like the neighborhood and the lay out of the apartment although we went three weeks without any furniture :)
